Healthy food to go

question

Q: My husband, 13-month-old daughter and I will be going on holiday soon. We'll be driving for long hours. We want to eat nutritiously while traveling What do you suggest?

answer

A: Because travelling itself will be something different, it is a good idea to stick with familiar foods. Bringing along foods from home is the best way to ensure good nutrition and healthy eating while on the road. To keep the food safe for serving you will need a good cooler, ice packs and a good thermos that holds its temperature for several hours so you can keep your daughter's milk cold.

You will need to stop along the way, perhaps at a shaded rest area with picnic tables or at a park so that you can eat. It isn't wise to feed a child riding in a car seat. If the child starts to choke, you may not be able to get to her in time to administer first aid. Stopping for meals or snacks is also a good idea nutritionally because it will keep food from being used as entertainment, as it often is in travel. Giving children snacks to keep them quiet in the back seat is sending the wrong message as to the role of food, (and we often wonder why we eat when we're bored!). Getting out of the car for a bit is a good idea anyway so that everyone can stretch and get some fresh air.

But, it's important t keep the water and drinks flowing throughout your journey. Water can vary, depending on where you're travelling, so use bottled mineral water. Pack individual juice containers that don't need refrigeration. The juice can be transferred to a bottle or cup.

Some good travel foods are those that mother nature has already packaged, like bananas, oranges and hard-boiled eggs. Try to stick with foods that are easy on the tummy, like bread, bananas, crackers and yogurt. The small boxes of cereal make good snacks. If you have any doubt as to how long the leftovers can stay cold in your cooler, then just throw them away.

Pack several different bags of toys and stuffed animals. Bring lots of books that you can read to your daughter and take along some of her favourite audio tapes.

Finally, don't forget a packet of baby wipes - and have a wonderful holiday!
