Is Indonesia safe?

by Dierdre Rooke

question
I've booked a holiday to Indonesia, but I've heard that the Foreign Office is advising British nationals not to travel there at the moment. What should I do? I'm desperate to go, and it's too late for me to get my money back!

answer
The bombing in Bali was a tremendous tragedy and one that is having far-reaching impact on this area of the world. The travel industry has been debating whether Bali and similar destinations in the region should be taken off the risk list, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has come under some criticism for the detrimental effects of its policy on this tourism-dependent country.

It is possible that the FCO is being over-cautious; as such a tragedy can only cause Bali's security to improve greatly. The positive news is that when you decide Bali is worth the risk, you are likely to be warmly welcomed. Take care and I am sure you will have a wonderful trip.
