How do I find a good small family resort?

by Dierdre Rooke

question
I want to take a holiday with my husband and my two children - a 5-year-old and a 2-year old. I don't fancy going to a huge all-inclusive resort with a kids club. Are there any smaller places where my kids could be looked after from time to time and we could have a relaxing time?

answer
There are many companies that offer holidays to smaller independent hotels. You could start by contacting the tourism offices of the country you wish to visit. These are a great source of ideas on places that offer individual and less 'packaged' accommodation. These often come with some of the amenities you would expect - swimming pool, restaurant and bar and arrangements for babysitting on request. Unfortunately most companies tend to emphasise all-inclusive Club Med and similar hotels. Find a knowledgeable travel agent who might have some other ideas and, of course, ask other parents - they will probably be able to point you in the right direction.
