Is travelling alone in Turkey safe?

by Dierdre Rooke

question
I'm considering going on a cheap package holiday to Turkey on my own for a fortnight. Will I be safe?

answer
Package tours in Turkey tend to concentrate on key resorts. Although you are travelling alone, you will probably be safe as you will likely stay near the resort or go on planned tours. It is worth considering local sensibilities: walking down a main street in a revealing bikini is likely to attract unwanted attention and put your security at risk ? not sensible if you are on your own, and no one else is 100% sure of your schedule.

Despite the sun-and-fun nature of many Turkish resorts for holidaymakers, you should be prepared to cover up with a sarong or loose trousers. This shows respect for local customs and helps avoid unwanted attention that might affect your safety. Have a good trip!
