20 essential theme park tips

Theme parkTheme park veteran Tracey Williams reveals her top tips on making a trip to theme parks a truly magical experience for kids and grown-ups alike

Before you go

1. Plan, plan, plan
Even if you naturally balk at anything resembling an itinerary on holiday, simply going with the flow at the theme park, will leave you frustrated and stressed. Before you go, check out their website, familiarise yourself with the park and it's various areas. Prioritise the attractions and don't forget to include a bit of 'down time' (otherwise you'll need a holiday to recover

2. Book a great room
Choose the best room within your budget. Choose one with a great view and try to be as near as possible to all attractions.

3. Get a value ticket
Never buy single-day park tickets. Find one that gives you better value. Some tickets allow you to go to more than one park on any given day to avoid the crowds.

4. Try going out of season
The summer months can be very hot depending on where you go and are also the busiest. Consider visiting at Easter (also busy, but less hot) or one of the half-terms.

5. Book dining in advance
If the kids want character dining, book well ahead of your holiday.

While you're there

6. Watch out for special deals
If you are staying at a theme park resort (and there are so many, from budget to deluxe, it's hard to imagine why you wouldn't), you can often take advantage of being able to hit the parks before and after they close. Each park has different offers, so check with your resort.

7. Visit the park early
Take a break and then come back later in the evening. The parks are much less crowded early in the mornings and you can head straight for the most popular rides first. Giving yourself a break in the middle of the day means you can enjoy the resort facilities, take a swim (or a nap) and be raring to go again late afternoon.
