A trip to the seaside has been a favourite day out for Brits since the town of Scarborough was recognised as the first seaside resort. It was Britain's most popular seaside town during the 19th century and as testament to our enduring love affair with the sea, Scarborough started the 21st century with an award for Most Improved Resort. The national tourist board, Visit Britain, expects almost 30 million people to visit the seaside this year.
