Romance on a budget

by Fiona Christie

question
I'd like to take my partner away for the weekend but I don't have a huge amount of cash. Could you suggest any good romantic places, which are easy to get to and not to pricey? I'd prefer to go somewhere on the continent but could settle for somewhere in the UK if it was special.

answer
Nice in the south of France is always a good choice, it's lively, you can go for romantic walks along the Mediterranean and best of all, it's one of the most affordable places on the French Riviera. Easyjet flies there and you can check out your accommodation options here.

The place of the moment in France is Lille. This year it's the European Capital of Culture and you can get there in style on the Eurostar. Click here to find out about hotel bookings and events in Lille.

If you're not keen on France, you might consider New York. The American dollar isn't in great shape at the moment, so a trip there will be cheaper than you think. You can get flights for under £200, check out www.cheapflights.com for lots of offers.

Finally, if you want to try something more unusual, try Poland. Air Polonia is doing cheap flights to Warsaw from London Stansted. Return fares for the Valentine's weekend are currently around £120 return each (including taxes). Warsaw itself is essentially a modern city (reconstructed post-world war two), but the old town has been meticulously rebuilt. Or you could catch the train to Krakow in the south which escaped the war pretty much unscathed. You'd need more than couple of days for Krakow, to allow for the train journey.

If none of these appeal to you, try checking out what cheap flights Easyjet and Ryanair have on offer for the weekend you're planning to travel.

Prices and details are correct at time of publication.
