Tynemouth gives it some mussel

By Liz McClarnon on 27 Jan 2012 2 comments

I was lucky enough to be up North over the christmas season, whilst finishing off my stint in Legally Blonde The Musical. We played the Sunderland Empire for over a month to great crowds and standing ovations. It was tremendous! I do love being on stage.

I had the pleasure of visiting a lovely up market area, north of Newcastle, between North Sheilds and Culercoats, called Tynemouth.

My friends and I took our dogs for a walk on the beach and even though it was a feeing cold winter's day and the winds were howling it was brilliant. The dogs went insane for the beach, running around like nutters, which left them suitably exhausted for us to pop into a great dog friendly cafe/restaurant on Front Street called Lui's Wine Bar and Bistro... the atmosphere was family oriented and friendly and the food was so-so-oh-oh good!

We went for a nice but large selection of tapas including….

The fried courgettes which were moist on the inside but perfectly crisp on the outside, the vegetable thai green curry filled all the fabulous spices it promised, tempura hake and vegetables, chicken in breadcrumbs (which actually I wanted to get the ingredients for the breadcrumbs as the had this southern spicy bite to them, which was just right), the falafel with tzatziki and what I found to be their piece de resistance - the mussels in a white wine, and cream sauce... the sauce was just absolutely beautiful (I mean it). It was rich, smooth, strong and the best bit, there was lots of it

The staff were lovely to get along with and made our short time in the bistro even more pleasurable and the locals were as polite as possibly could be.

With the Help of Lui's, i found Tynemouth to be an enchanting place, with a castle (for that extra bit of 'Once upon a time'…) and non chain shops (LOVE IT) and hey... Ridley Scott went to school there!!!!

Sold?! Thought so!
