The research found that most of us are dehydrated inside and outside due to lack of moisturising and correct water intake. In fact, the findings suggest that 64 per cent of the UK population wake up to some form of dehydrated skin symptom every morning. But many dry skin problems need not be chronic and most could be easily prevented.
What's causing the skin drought?
Vaseline research found that we're surprisingly ignorant when it comes to skin health. For example, half of us don't realise that it's not always enough to drink plenty of water every day and that we may also need to moisturise on a daily basis to replenish our skin. What's more, only a quarter of us drink the recommended four pints of water every day. One in four of us never ever moisturises, while one in ten only moisturise on 'special occasions'.
The importance of moisturising every day
We lose up to a half a pint of water every day through skin evaporation alone, so it's important to make sure we replenish our skin daily, especially when the weather's very hot or cold. Here are just some of the benefits of daily moisturising:
- Boosts skin moisture levels
- Can improve mood levels
- Can enhance concentration levels
- Helps achieve healthy looking skin
- There's no excuse for not moisturising every day. The best time to do it is straight after a bath or shower when the skin's still damp and you can lock all that moisture in.
- Exfoliate body skin at least once a week to remove dead skin cells and encourage cell renewal, helping your skin look and feel smoother and healthier.
- Try not to drink too much caffeine during the day as it can be very dehydrating when drunk excessively. Instead try drinking the recommended four pints of water a day.
- Central heated bedrooms can be extremely dehydrating, so invest in a humidifier for your bedroom, place a couple of glasses of water on your radiator - or simply open the window if it's not too chilly.
- Your skin reflects your overall wellbeing, so if you enjoy a healthy lifestyle it will show. Simple steps like eating five fruit and veg a day and getting enough sleep each night can have a dramatic effect on your skin health.
