Vocabulary builder - adverb reaction

This activity provides a visual way for children to understand how adverbs work in sentences (it usually modifies the meaning of a verb, for example 'she ran quickly'). It also gives them a chance to be creative as they decide how to respond to the player who is trying to guess the adverb.

What this activity will develop:
Vocabulary and thinking skills

What you'll need: Chart paperMarker

What to do:
Print a list of adverbs on the chart paper.

For example:

Word list:

easily
restlessly

slowly
coldly

peacefully
loudly

quickly
angrily

rapidly
quietly

happily
sharply

softly
carefully

harshly
crisply

Display the chart so that all the players can see it.

Players:
Game leader
4 to 20 players

Rules of play:

The game leader picks someone to leave the room. While that player is out, the other players choose one of the adverbs from the list to use as a reaction when the player returns. The player comes back in and tries to guess the adverb by asking questions of each of the other players. The other players respond in a way that gives a clue about the adverb. For example, if the adverb is 'softly', the player might say, 'Sam, is this a word I would use if I were angry at someone?' Pat would answer by whispering in a soft voice. The questioning continues until the player guesses the adverb. The game leader crosses the adverb off the list and chooses another player to leave the room.
