What PMT type are you?
Are you an anxious Annie, Bloated Betty, Comfort Eating Carrie or a Down Debbie? Symptoms of PMT are diverse and distinct with some people suffering in a completely different way to others, but looking at groups of symptoms can help you figure out what type of PMT you suffer from
PMT is thought to affect around 30-40 per cent of menstruating women, with symptoms typically occurring 7 to 14 days prior to having a period. Symptoms can become worse as women head into their 30s and 40s and their hormones begin to change.
According to American doctor, Dr Guy Abraham there are four main types of PMT. So what type are you?
Anxious Annie, Type A - Anxiety
This category is common in up to 80 per cent of women and includes symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, anxiety and tension.
Comfort Eating Carrie, Type C - Cravings
This group includes cravings for sweets or chocolates, increased appetite, fatigue and headaches. Up to 60 per cent of women can experience these kinds of symptoms leading up to their period.
Bloated Betty, Type H - Hyperhydration
Type H includes symptoms such as water retention, breast tenderness and enlargement, abdominal bloating and weight gain. Up to 40 per cent of women can experience these changes.
This can be related to high sodium and alcohol intake, so reducing salt and cutting back on the wine can help.
Down Debbie, Type D - Depression
Depression is the largest symptom in this group but it can also include confusion, forgetfulness, clumsiness, withdrawal, lack of co-ordination, crying spells and confusion.
Whatever your type, when PMT hits it can be tempting to barricade yourself at home with a family size chocolate bar, but there is another way.
Increasing numbers of women are seeking a more natural approach to this problem and studies into PMT have found that the herb Agnus Castus improved PMT symptoms of irritability, mood alteration, anger, headache, and breast fullness by 50 per cent or more*.
In another study using Agnus Castus 36 per cent of women using the herb saw all symptoms disappear after use**.
