When am I safe from miscarriage?

Question:

I have read that miscarriage rates in the 1st trimester are about 25-33%, but when do most of these miscarriages occur? Am I safe after about 8 weeks?

Answer:

The statistics you have read are correct. Miscarriage can happen at any stage of pregnancy to 24 weeks, but most occur earlier than 12 weeks and the majority of those below 8 weeks. So, if you've had a normal scan at 8 weeks then the chance of miscarriage is less than 15%, and less than 5% if you have a normal scan at 11 weeks. We do hope that this information is reassuring to you.
