Where's the best place to buy plants?
My mother has come up with a list of plants that I should grow in my new garden. She has given me the full Latin names but I have no idea where to buy them. Can you help?
It is really useful that you have the full Latin plant names. Some plants have more than one common name and this can cause great confusion – so stick to the full names. If your list is extensive then get a copy of the RHS Plant Finder (available in most book shops).
This holds the Latin names of all the plants that are available to buy in the UK. It is in alphabetical order and after each name is a code which refers to the directory of nurseries at the back of the book. If the plants she has suggested are unusual then you may need to call specialist nurseries. Many nurseries now offer a mail order service.
An alternative is to head to your nearest garden centre with your list in hand. Here you will find help and they may be able to recommend suitable replacements if they don’t stock all the plants you require. For your nearest garden centre visit www.thegardencentregroup.co.uk
Spring is a great time to plant so you would be well advised to start looking for the plants soon.
