Possibly the more familiar version of the Irish bread, this recipe for white soda bread makes the perfect accompaniment to a Paddy's Day feast
 

Ingredients

  • 450g plain flour
  • 1 level tsp bread soda
  • 1 heaped tsp Bextartar (cream of tartar)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 25g soft margarine
  • 1 egg whisked with 250ml buttermilk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to Gas Mark /).
  2. Sieve the dry ingredients into a big bowl. Rub in the margarine. Pour in the egg and buttermilk mixture and stir well. Turn out onto a floured board and knead lightly for a minute or two. Shape into a round, flatten slightly.
  3. Place on a baking sheet. Mark with a deep cross and bake in the preset oven for approximately - minutes.
  4. Cool on a wire rack.
