Why are floozies like Helen Wood given airtime?

By Sian Claire Owen on 24 Jun 2011 No comments

There are certain women in the world who make my skin crawl. Women who will gun for your man in your face, just for the hell of it. Sleazy women who target slimy celebs just so they can cash in on their sordid encounters.

Imogen Thomas had a series of drunken tatty shags with Ryan Giggs then claimed it was love, after which we were subject to her tearful outpourings on Daytime TV and in the papers. Oh she did a great job of painting herself as the injured party – but now she’s just got her own TV programme “Imogen Finds a Husband’ - and no, the irony isn’t lost on us either.

Helen Wood is another one. She’s the prostitute who had a threesome with Wayne Rooney whilst Coleen was pregnant with their son. The prostitute then sold her story and is currently trying to market herself as a Kiss & Tell celeb in her own right.

And the awful tart just won’t go away. “I don’t regret hurting her [Coleen] because the way I see it is, if you want to be a dick get back with the person who cheated on you,” she said in a recent interview for ES Magazine. Jaw dropping, isn’t it.

Read: “I don’t regret hurting Coleen Rooney because I’ve never met her in my life so why should I care? Plus I’m a hard faced bitch with no conscience, or class, or elegance or dignity.”

These women claim the moral high ground whilst posing half naked in the tabloids, milking their 15 minutes of fame, spilling tit bits of their sordid encounters with Premier League footballers or Z-list celebs. And the press gives them the airtime they so desperately crave! Why?!

Frankly I’m bored of seeing these nonentities in the news. There are plenty of women out there who are doing fascinating, groundbreaking and important things that I’d much rather know about.

Women like Katie Piper, who suffered a horrific acid attack that left her disfigured, but who went on to create the Katie Piper Foundation that helps people cope with burns and scars.

Women like Michelle Obama - who was raised in a one-bedroom apartment in Chicago, yet she studied hard, graduated from Harvard Law School and eventually became the First Lady of the United States of America!

And, my personal fave, BBC One’s Miranda Hart – she’s hilarious, witty and I can relate to her hopelessly slapstick romantic antics. Plus her new self-named comedy series (well, her old ‘new’ series) on BBC One has me in stitches from start to finish. She’s a celeb worth knowing about and her sit-com is a knockout.

Why oh why can we not celebrate women for their achievements WITHOUT having them to wear bikinis, or shag footballers, or launch their ‘fame’ on the back of vapid reality TV programmes? It’s too much and it’s becoming depressing. Meh.

And on that note, have a great weekend!
