Wimbledon: Players to watch

Rebecca Morris profiles four outsiders who could spring a few surprises.

Mark Philippoussis (AUS)

Philippoussis is called Scud as in scud missile, because of his enormous serve. This tall Australian should have won a Grand Slam by now, but has had a career plagued by injury. He has a domineering father who keeps his career in check, but has suffered because of his influence - not always good.

He once dated Anna Kournikova, and with his Greek ancestry and good looks he is very popular with the ladies.

Useless fact: He has a tattoo of Alexander the Great on his right arm.

Jan-Michael Gambill (USA)

Age: 26 Height: 6ft 3in Weight: 14st 2lb

Singles titles: 3 Career prize money: $2,974,053 Ranked: 39

It is no surprise that this American with a Colgate smile, blonde locks and great physique is known as Hollywood. 2000 was a good year for him. After reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals he was named as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine.

He may not reach the latter stages of the tournament but his looks alone merit a few words. He appeared as one of the new faces in the promotional New Balls Please campaign for men's tennis.

Useless fact: He collects Jaguars - the cars, not the cats. He had six at the last count.

Jelena Dokic (YUG)

Age: 20 Height: 5ft 9in Weight: 9st 4lbSingles titles: 5 Career prize money: $2,951,978 Seeded: 11

Dokic came to prominence at Wimbledon in 1999 after beating the then world number one Martina Hingis in the first round.

Her career has often been put in the shadow by the antics of her overbearing father Damir. In 2001, Damir Dokic nearly completed a Grand Slam of evictions at Grand Slam tournaments - for some unknown reason he was on his best behaviour at the French Open. At Jelena's insistence, her father now has very little involvement with her career.

Serbian-born Jelena became an Australian citizen in 1994, but after problems with the Australian press and tennis federation, renounced her citizenship in favour of becoming a Yugolsav.

Useless fact: Is dating motor racing driver Enrique Bernoldi.

Lisa Raymond (USA)

Age: 29 Height: 5ft 5in Weight: 8st 6lbSingles titles: 4 Career prize money: $4,802,354 Seeded: 23

This affable American is usually a threat on grass, until she comes up against a Williams sister - where her lack of power is evident, and she gets thrashed. One of only a handful of serve-and-volley players left in the game, her variety of shots make her a delight to watch.

She is a whiz on 80's trivia and unfortunately her game is more suited to that era, rather than the power game of today. She is more noted as a doubles player, where she has won numerous titles, but don't call her a doubles specialist unless you want to get the full wrath of her 5ft 5in frame.

Useless fact: Travels with Casy, her dachshund, wherever possible.
