Win a poinsettia and brighten up your home this Winter

As the winter sets in and the days get shorter, it becomes more important than ever to create a cosy and welcoming environment in the home. A great way to add a splash of colour and banish any winter gloom is to decorate your home with a beautiful poinsettia.

Originally hailing from Central America, today poinsettias have true cult Christmas time status in most countries across Europe.  Back in the 1950s, the first houseplant poinsettias were bred and ever since then, the winter-flowering plant has become a permanent part of Christmas symbolism and decoration. The poinsettia’s star-shaped leaves fit in perfectly with existing Christmas symbols and the classic poinsettia colours of red and green have always been symbolic of Advent and Christmas.

Whether adorned with festive decorations or just standing alone, the poinsettia is not only one of the most important symbols for Christmas time, it is also ideal as a festive decoration and makes a great gift for those who take pride in their home.

However, a poinsettia is not just for Christmas, as by following a few simple tips you can ensure they last well into the New Year:

  1. Too much water will leave your poinsettia in a bad state. When watering, wait until your plant clearly looks thirsty. Dehydrated hanging leaves will quickly recover after being refreshed.
  2. Avoid the cold and draughts – the best climate for your poinsettia is room temperature between 15 and 22 degrees Centigrade
  3. Watch out when buying your poinsettia! Careful nurturing will be in vain if the poinsettia was already damaged before purchase. Check for strong thick foliage and budded flowers without any visible sign of damage while picking your plant.
