How do I deal with unsafe email attachments?

question
Lots of friends have sent me emails with attachments, and rather than risk a virus, I delete them. How can I delete a file in my email without using my mouse to “click” on the thing, or is that OK?

answer
When you receive email with attachments, they can't do anything to your computer until you open them. Every email programme has a way for you to safely save your attachments to a disk without actually opening them. This is virus-safe. Then, after saving a file, use a virus checker on it to see if it's OK to use.

You can then delete the message the file's attached to without messing about with it.

If you want to save the attachment in Netscape Messenger, open the message that contains the attachment. Then, if the attachment appears as an icon at the bottom of the message, right-click on it, and select 'Save Attachment As' from the menu.

If the message appears in a box that describes what kind of attachment it is, with an underline under the name of the file, then right-click the filename and select 'Save Link As' from the menu. In either case, you'll see a 'File Save As' dialogue box, in which you can select where to save it (I usually put this type of thing in a folder called Check4Viruses).

If you use Outlook, select the message (you don't have to open it), then choose 'File>Save Attachment', then select the file from those listed. Again, you'll see a 'File Save As' dialogue box, so just save the file somewhere.

In order to check files for viruses, download a virus checker from the Web. A good one is VirusScan by McAfee (you can buy it at your local software shop - a good option if you don't feel like taking the time to download it. The version you get from the Internet is set to lock up after a set period, so you'll need to pay for it at some time). If you want something free, you can try InoculateIT.
