How do I speed up my computer?
My computer has suddenly started running really slowly. I know that our hard drive is getting full, but it hasn't had anything added recently (before the problem started). It seems to get worse with the length of time it has been running - if I reboot it gets better.
This is especially true with Windows '98, which seems to get confused when the computer is left on for too many days. The second problem you have is that your hard disk is almost full - this is especially so if you're using Windows. Windows uses some of your hard disk space as if it were memory (RAM), so that it can have plenty of space in which to do its thing.
If the free space on the hard disk is limited, this will make it very hard for Windows to find a large enough block of space in one place on the disk.
One thing you can do to help is to first remove whatever files you can onto floppies to free up your hard disk as much as possible. Then run Windows Disk Defragmenter youll find it in the System Tools menu off the Start menuassuming you run Windows 98.
Another suggestion that comes to mind is periodically clearing the TEMP directory files that are older than the time of the last reboot. The more TEMP directory files that Windows has to manage simultaneously, the slower it becomes.
