Can't do some of my job

by Work Rights Expert, Rachel Lewis

question
I work for a newsagent which means doing at least two early mornings a week, but the newspapers are very heavy on some mornings. There can be 15 to 20 bundles of papers and magazines. I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant. My employers said that they will help, but it will mean reducing my working hours from 45 a week to 35 with a reduction in pay, can they do this?

answer
First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy!

Has your employer carried out a risk assessment of your job? If not, they should do. If you can't do part of the job, you shouldn't suffer a detriment (e.g. salary reduction) as a result - there's a strong hint of discrimination there.

It's good that your employer is prepared to help but they need to do so in a different way, by finding alternative work for you to do so that you don't suffer a detriment in terms of pay .
Good luck
Rachel
