Uniform: do I have to wear it?

by Work Rights Expert, Rachel Lewis

question
Recently, the company I work for has attained overalls and hats for its staff. Up until this time very few people have worn them as, from a health and safety aspect, they are not necessary. Can our employer force us to wear these garments? Thanks for your reply.
Anne

answer
Hi Anne
The first place to look is your contract. If there is anything in it that states that you must wear a particular uniform, then I'm afraid you must. If the requirement is stated in a staff handbook or is on a staff noticeboard or something similar, it is likely that, although not wearing the uniform will not be a breach of contract, it may be a breach of your employer's disciplinary rules, and therefore you could be subject to disciplinary action.

Why is it that you do not wish to wear the uniform provided and why does your employer wish you to? It might help to explain your concerns to your employer. There may be changes that can be made to the uniform to make it more acceptable to you.
