Council Tax Benefit

What is it?
A benefit to help you pay your council tax if your income is low or you're getting JSA or Income Support.

How much is it?
You may get all of your Council Tax paid or just part of it. It will depend on your income, savings, whether other adults live with you, and an assessment of your circumstances.

How do I claim?
If you're getting Jobseeker's Allowance or Income Support you will get a Council Tax claim form with your JSA/Income Support claim form. Otherwise get a form from your local council.

Anything else?
If you are the only adult living in your home you should get a 'single occupancy discount' on your council tax bill, you can check with the council or look on your council tax bill to make sure you have this discount.

The information included here is provided from the fact sheet Money for Mothers and Babies, produced in March 2004 and gives benefit rates from April 2004. It is important always to get up-to-date information.
