Twins and maternity leave

question
I’m currently 19 weeks pregnant with twins. I’m getting very tired as my pregnancy progresses. When is the best time to go on maternity leave? Also, I have not felt any movement or ‘flutters’ yet. When should these happen?

answer
Sorry to learn that you are getting tired. Many mums do say this happens earlier with a multiple pregnancy. Make sure that you rest whenever you can, especially at weekends. Remember, you are entitled to take time off to visit the antenatal clinic.

Your doctor or midwife can supply a form MAT B1 from your 26th week. You send this with a letter to your employer – but it is best to notify your employer a few weeks earlier than this date, if you intend to start your maternity leave at this stage. For more information about when to stop work, have a look at our article, ‘Calling it a day’.

At 19 weeks I expect you’ll feel your babies moving soon. (They have, of course, been moving already, but you haven’t been able to feel them.) You may find the article about
twin pregnancies of interest.
