Can I bunk off a training day?
My company are organising an adventure training weekend and as far as I can tell, it involves a great deal of physical exercise. I am not terribly fit, and although they clearly state that the training will cater for all levels of fitness I am not confident about going. It mentions in my contract that I may be expected to attend training pertinent to my job, but I don't see how this sort of training will help me in my job as I work in a managerial position. However, many people in the office are really excited about it, so I don't want to be the one that brings everyone down, but I really don't want to go. Can you advise me as to how I can get out of it, surely this sort of thing isn't suited to everyone?

Whether your employer can 'force' you to go depends almost entirely on your contract. If your contract specifies that you are required to attend training 'pertinent to your job' then as you say, there is likely to be a bit of a battle over the definition of 'pertinent'.
It's difficult on the face of it to see how trailing up hills and through potholes is likely to be of direct relevance to your job. But on the other hand, there must be an argument that it's all about learning team playing, and general interaction - which can only be helpful to you as a manager. So, I think there are arguments contractually why you should go. If, on the other hand, you never normally work weekends, and if you have (say) childcare commitments, then you may have better arguments for avoiding it.
