A career in IT? Part 1

by Caro Handley
A career in IT?Not sure whether you'd be any good at working with computers? Don't be so modest, you could be much more skilled than you think. Have a look at these options to see if you have the necessary attributes.

Getting basic skills
Computer skills are becoming increasingly important in the workplace, especially in offices. It's well worth learning how to use email and the Web, and getting to know your way around a Windows PC. Also, familiarise yourself with popular office software packages such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases and presentations.

These skills make you more employable and are valuable even if you've taught them to yourself. Often an employer or agency that wants to check that you can use Microsoft Word will give you a test. If you have a recognised qualification such as ECDL or CLAIT, then you're in an even stronger position.

Working in IT
For a job in IT you'll need more than just surfing skills, but you don't necessarily need a degree in computing - there are plenty of jobs that demand fewer skills and qualifications. Even the job titles in IT can be baffling and jargon-packed, but they roughly break down into three different roles: programmers, operators and support staff.
