Should I stay
or should I go?
Knowing when to move jobs is a tricky business. Move too soon and prospective employers could consider you flighty, but stay too long and you could miss out on exciting job opportunities and developments in your field. The important thing is to make the right decision for the right reasons.
The time to make your move from job to job is when you are embarking on a new episode of your career. You're an apprentice, and your goal is not to serve, but to learn -- to find the right 'master craftsman' who can teach you everything. The funny thing about work is that when you're young and starting out, you feel like a Girl Friday. In truth, you need to hire yourself the best boss possible. She or he should serve you as a teacher. You'll have plenty of time to serve others once you become a leader yourself. The hierarchy is a very strange creature. While the top can be a place for kings and queens, responsibilities can leave leaders feeling like they're working for everybody else.
When you hit your 30s, try learning the art of staying put. We're often too quick to give up when something's not working. We break up relationships, we turn away from problems, saying self-serving things like, 'It wasn't going anywhere,' or 'I only take on projects that give me energy.' Please! Some of the greatest things we can learn come from riding through the bad times till they get good again. It's too easy to give up. Stay put, see a tough job through, and you will learn a lot and your CV will have a newfound glow.
