Jobless: the first 72 hours

by Hope Dlugozima
Don't fret or mope. This could be the start of something good. Find out how to get on track pronto

So you’ve resigned, been sacked or been made redundant. To survive and thrive, you need a strategy for those first few hours. Here's how to start:

  • Take charge of your PR.
Once you've resigned or even if you're devastated by a less-than-ideal parting of the ways, your first task is to tell the world why and how you left before someone else does. Within the first day or so, send out a group email to friends, business associates and potential future employers where you have a personal contact. Make it obvious that this is a group email so no one feels they have to reply unless they have specific news for you. (You'll soon learn that making people feel guilty is something to avoid whilst unemployed.)

Your email could say something like, 'As some of you may have already heard, I've decided to leave UK Plc. Specifically, I'm going to be (give details here. It could be that you'll be doing freelance work or travelling or setting up your own business). In the short-term, I can still be contacted at my current email address. From 1st February, you can contact me at newname@internet.co.uk. I've had a great time at UK Plc - working on its flagship software, launching version 4.0 and liaising with engineers across Europe - but it's time for me to leave and try something new.' (This is a casual way of reminding people what you’ve achieved.)
