Job-hopping: does it harm your CV?

by Irene Krechowiecka

question
After working in a good job for 12 years, my role came under threat due to outsourcing. I successfully found another job, only to be made redundant within 6 months, which was obviously a shock.

I have since started working for another IT company, but I am finding it frustrating in my current position. I would have liked a different role and one that is mobile or home-based, as I currently have to live away from home during the week.

I am concerned that raising this with management will cause difficulties so soon after joining. Do you think that leaving this job now could be damaging to my CV, especially as I have one recent short-term role on there already?

answer

You're right - to have two short term jobs in quick succession could damage the credibility of your CV, but, within the context of your overall employment record, it may not be that significant. You have obviously had a stable and successful career and can portray your first move in a positive way. Being made redundant is not something anyone has control over, and is now so common that few employers are disturbed by seeing it on an application.

However, it is always worth exploring all other possibilities before leaving. If your employer made some commitment to giving you the role you wanted, it's worth following up. Living away from home in the week is a good reason for wanting to change things. Employers increasingly like to be able to boast about their family-friendly working practices. Give yours the chance to have something to be proud of.
