I fudged dates on my CV
Ive just landed a new job that I love, but am now in a bit of a panic. I didn't want there to be a gap on my CV for a period of time when I was laid off, so I increased the amount of time that I spent at the jobs before and after to make it appear like a seamless transition. Now I hear that my new HR department has a policy of checking every fact on your CV, even after you've been hired. What can I do if HR finds out?
If HR finds out you could come clean and explain the gap. In the meantime, try to do the best job you can and strike up a good, trustworthy relationship with your boss. Ultimately, it is your boss who has the biggest say in whether you stay or go.
People always try to present themselves in the best possible light on their CVs. But thats not the same as exaggerating or lying outright, both of which can get you sacked. And where you can get caught out is during the process of having your references checked.
Normally, references and employment dates are checked before you start your job. Lying on a CV is a good reason for not hiring someone. Sometimes its a reason for firing too.
After theyve taken you on, most employers won't have the time to look back through CVs to check your references all over again. However, such a check might be triggered if an employee wasn't working to the standard suggested by the CV.
A CV is a document that details your ability to do the job that you have been taken on to do. If you work hard, are a team player and demonstrate your ability by doing a good job, I suspect the CV issue is likely to be played down.
