Too old to be a trainee

by Irene Krechowiecka

question
I returned to education as a mature student, and I am now in the throes of attempting to establish a career for the first time. Although I have worked before now, it took me a while to decide what I wanted from life. Consequently, I gravitated towards more transient employment, most of it in the same employment area.

This pattern is proving to be my downfall. Many of the prospective employers and recruitment consultants I have spoken with appear concerned that I will either get bored and leave any job I might be offered, or else I will decide to continue with my education.

I am considered too old to be a graduate trainee and too experienced and educated for 'junior' positions. Prospective employers are suspicious about my recent inability to get any work and, until I do get some work, I am deemed unemployable. I'm being flexible and am willing to consider a number of options, so far without any positive results. Any suggestions?

answer

You obviously made a positive decision to move your career in a certain direction when you went back to study. That shows determination, an ability to make long-term plans and act on them. You need to make this clear in any application you write or when you talk to employers. There's no harm in saying what you have written here - that it took you a while to decide on what you wanted but now you do know and have started to make very definite moves towards getting it.
