I want to be a a textile designer
I am in my final year at university studying a textile design degree. I am currently in the process of applying for jobs, but am having difficulty knowing where to begin. I would like to work as a designer for soft furnishings. Do you have any advice you could give me to help me make a start?
A good way to identify potential employers is to look at who is making the sort of products that appeal to you and get in touch with them. Design-related jobs are not always advertised but go by word of mouth or through speculative application. If there's a company whose work you like, get in touch. They'll be flattered that you've made the effort to research them. Tell them why you are attracted to their products, show that you have looked into what they do and make suggestions about what you can bring to their organisation. Include design ideas and be prepared to take along a portfolio of work to show them.
While you're still at university don't overlook the fact that your tutors and the university careers service are an invaluable resource. They will have contacts and information on where previous graduates found work. Past students, now in employment can be a starting point for building the network of contacts you need to break into the industry. Many may be in a position to employ new graduates. The Textile Institute provide a recruitment service for their members, check details on www.texi.org and take a look at The Register of Apparel and Textile Designers. There is a fee to join the register.
