Networking and mutual mentoring
Lynne Franks explains the importance of networking and mentoring in getting your new business off the ground.
Networking and mutual mentoring with individuals from many organisations and sources has always come naturally to me, and has been a key reason for the success of my businesses.
Of course, there is limited time to network when you are starting a new business, but you have to consider it a crucial part of 21st century business technique. You will learn so much, bring in new business, and make some great friends, many who have gone through the same experiences and growing pains as you have or will.
Groups to which you could reach out could include communal and local co-operatives and partnership networks; professional trade associations; womens and ethnic minorities business organisations; socially responsible, environmental, and sustainable business networks; and the local chamber of commerce and other semi-official business groups.
By being in contact with others in this way, you will be weaving a web of energy and connections that will help sustain and nurture you and your business, as well as allow you to be in a position to nurture and inspire others.
Ive been a founder, member, or associate of a variety of British, American, and international professional womens networks over the years, to whom I have spoken on many occasions. This has enabled me to enjoy a role of mentor and sharer of experiences and information, which of course I am always happy to do.
However, Ive always considered that I have received the most valuable input and contacts for my own professional and personal growth from a variety of different types of sources. Among them are, for example, Social Venture Network a group of socially responsible entrepreneurs primarily from the United States and Europe.
Networking is how I first met the inspirational bundle of energy, Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop, who, together with her husband, Gordon, were two of the original members of Social Venture Network, along with my friend Josh Mailman and Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerrys ice cream.
