Networking and mutual mentoring
Anita has for many years generously given her time to a variety of business, educational, and womens networks, and speaks at large and small meetings all over the world. She inspires all who come into contact with her with stories of her own experiences, good and bad, as well as her intelligent and articulate vision of how we can improve the world we live in.
But Im sure Anita would be the first to admit that shes received a tremendous amount back from her networking, in the form of ideas and information which she used to create breakthroughs at the Body Shop.
Research the womens and other business networks that youre most interested in and get yourself on the mailing lists so that you can attend meetings or conferences held locally. Youll not only meet other like-minded souls and business contacts, youll also be creating opportunities to grow your business and to improve the environment in which we all live and work.
Some necessary networking tips
- Always carry business cards and dont be shy about distributing them.
- At the end of the day write on the back of any cards that you receive, where you met the person and any important notes about them.
- Follow up new contacts with email or faxes.
- Send people you meet samples of your work, if appropriate.
- Listen to, and be interested in, others.
- Be generous with your information.
- Be open to networking in unusual locations. Could be the hairdressers, on holiday, or at a family wedding.
