How to hang on to good projects

by Ronna Lichtenberg

question
'My boss always makes a lot of promises but never keeps them. I am often told about a project that I will be asked to handle. But at the time of the project, it always gets taken away from me. Either someone else ends up doing it or it gets binned. This is exasperating, as I often prepare for it and know that I can do it well. What should I do? I can't stand it any more.'

answer
Have you talked to your boss about it? A few things could be going wrong, ranging from the trivial to the very serious.

At the serious end, it could be that your boss isn't happy with what you’re doing. If so, you need to address this straight away, and the only way to do that is directly. Next time it happens, explain to your boss that you’re concerned about losing control of the project, and that you’d like to know if anything you’ve done in the past wasn’t up to scratch in some way. Then listen. Your boss may be someone who avoids conflict and finds it difficult to tell you that there's a problem.

On the other hand, it may be that you work in a place that’s so badly organised that, in general, things don't get done. Work out whether this is just happening to your projects or to everyone else’s as well.
