How to... Survive the Party
You agreed to go to the office party. Instead of dwelling on how you allowed such a thing to happen, have fun by following these simple tips
From How To Do Just About Everything in the Office, in association with eHow (Collins, £9.99)
Steps
- Enjoy yourself, first and foremost. Would you rather be at home washing the dishes? If the answer is yes, keep thinking of mundane chores until you find one you would not want to be doing at the moment
- You see someone you think you'd like to know better. He or she ignores you. So? Pat yourself on the back for knowing that your soulmate is not necessarily hanging out in a meat market. Let it go and find someone else with better manners
- Be someone you're not - try on a new hat. Play the part of the spoiled rich girl, the alpha-wolf guy, the dumb blonde
- Be careful not to drink too much, in case you are approached by someone with a bad pick-up line. 'May I end this sentence with a proposition?' might work on you if you have had a few too many
- Remember, though, that as lame as pick-up lines might be, the person is making an effort to show an interest in you. If you are even remotely interested, laugh, say hello and begin a normal conversation
- Be polite if someone wants to talk to you and you aren't interested. If the person won't leave you alone, say that you have a boyfriend or girlfriend
- Save your flirting for when you really want to use it
Tips
Be sure you know how you're getting home before you go out.
Interestingly enough, 71 per cent of men report success when they use the pick-up line 'Hi'.
Warnings
Don't put yourself into a dangerous situation, such as being alone in a dark alley with a strange man - or woman.
