Our office is a tip

by Irene Krechowiecka

question
Our office is a tip. The small kitchen area is absolutely disgusting and my company are (I suspect) too tight to pay a cleaner to come in everyday. I always seem to spending my time washing up and it’s beginning to drive me mad. I can’t believe no one can see the mess that I can see. I’ve tried putting notes up asking people to wash as they go, so to speak, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Have you got any ideas?

answer
It’s easy for the people you’re tidying up after to dismiss you as a fusspot and carry on leaving a mess. Everyone has different standards of what’s acceptable, now you’ve let them know it bothers you more than them they can be quite confident that you’ll keep clearing it up. Surprise them. Stop using the office kitchen. Bring drinks in, treat yourself to a lunch out, do anything but go into the offending area. If you don’t see it, it won’t bother you any more. It’s a much more effective way of making your point.
