Six tips for getting big pay rises

by Gordon Miller
As the job for life has all but evaporated and the national skills shortage gathers pace, the rules of job loyalty have changed.

If you’re looking to get a healthy pay rise, here are six ways to improve your salary.

1. Get a job with the right company in the right industry. Many industries and sectors are experiencing skills shortages. Go for job with a forward-looking company in one of those areas.

2. Think of jumping tracks as a smart career move. Staying with the same company for 10-20 years used to be a common career strategy. But in today’s job market, it can be rather risky. Companies have shown that they won’t hesitate to lay you off, or sell off your department, or outsource your job if it helps them become more competitive or more profitable.

3. Always have an eye on your next job. Keep up to date on the hottest companies and industries in your market. Stay in touch with your market and always keep an eye out for new opportunities. But remain loyal to your company while you are there too. Do your best for them even if you are planning to leave soon.

4. Market yourself. Think of yourself the way companies think of a new product. Ask yourself what you need to do to position yourself for future success. Don't wait for the market to come to you.

5. Impress the winners. Set up an interview with a great company, research them and come up with some fresh ideas that you can unveil at the interview. Don't just present yourself in the conventional ways. By showing them exactly what you can do for them and how you will do it, you will set yourself apart from all the other candidates.

6. Present yourself and your fresh ideas with a passion! Take past awards, outstanding references and commendations with you. And save the 'what is the company going to do for me?’ questions until the end of the interview.
