Missing out money at the interview

I recently had an interview, which went well. Now I've got a second interview. This next stage is different to what I'm used to. Successful candidates have to spend a day at the office to see how everyone gets along. The trouble is, I don't know what the salary is. I forgot to broach the subject at the interview. If it's below a certain level, I'm not interested in the job, and it will be a waste of everyone's time. How can I find out, tactfully? I clearly stated my current salary in my application. Would it be fair to assume they wouldn't have asked me to an interview if they were offering less?

You can't assume that a new employer wouldn't offer you less than you're currently earning - it's unlikely but still possible. They may feel that they have so much to offer that you'd work for them whatever, so it is always best to check things out rather than guess. One way round this is to write or phone thanking them for the initial interview and adding that there were a few things you forgot to ask about. Make sure you do have at least a couple of questions so the one on salary is not just there on its own. That way you don't appear to be only concerned about money - although that is a valid concern and quite rightly a major factor in any decision you make.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this then go for the second interview. If you like what you've seen so far the chances are this is going to be a good move for you. Wasting a day's leave is a small risk to take.
