Dns
Domain Name System. A DNS allows your computer to search a network to find another computer, server or website by an alphabetic name, like iVillage. Without a DNS, you would need to know the numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address -- e.g. 202.161.53.2. It's roughly equivalent to remembering a phone number by an easy to remember word, say, 0800 FLOWERS, instead of by the actual phone number. (see Domain name)
