A chain of interconnected networks worldwide. The Internet includes commercial, academic and government networks. It was developed in the late 1960s for military use but quickly became popular with scientists and academic institutions as a resource for sharing unpublished data and journals.
This document sharing is the backbone of the World Wide Web. Graphics-based Web browsers such as Netscape made it easier for everyday computer owners to surf the Web, greatly increasing the Internet's popularity.
