1. Software that checks how well a computer is working. Many personal computers run anti-virus diagnostic software as soon as they are turned on. 2. Error messages that compilers send when there is a problem with a programmer's code. Most diagnostics will include a line number, so the programmer knows exactly where to look for the problem.
