Prepare for your multi-year maternity leave

by Sylvia Ho
Find out how to prepare so that you can return to work in style and on your own terms.

Many members of the iVillage community are making the transition from working full-time to staying at home to care for children full-time. This can be a difficult move to make after so many years spent building careers. I have heard the frustrations many times. But believe it or not it is possible to leave the job market for several years and still rejoin at the level you left. Use these tips to help you plan ahead:

1. Leave your job on good terms. You want your former boss and colleagues to remember you as someone they’d love to work with again. Leaving on a positive note increases the chance that they will recommend you for a position later if a job opportunity arises. They’ll also be more likely to give you leads on other available jobs and to provide good references.

2. Keep in touch with your former boss and colleagues. You want to stay up to date on changes in your field and know about openings in your company. Keeping in touch reminds your former boss and colleagues that you haven’t lost interest and that you plan to return at some point.

3. Keep networking. Stay in touch with professional friends and colleagues. Keep up your membership of trade associations -- and attend meetings! This will help you expand the group of people you can contact when you are ready to re-launch your career.

4. Keep your skills updated. There will be many changes while you are away and you need to know about them. Read about your industry. Hone your computer and other skills, so you will always have the skills that are in demand in your industry. Set a budget aside for courses that will keep you up to date -- and do them! Look out for voluntary work where you can use your expertise. Even an hour a week will be something to add to your CV once you resume your job-hunt.
