Our straight talking Lancashire lass takes a sideways look at the daily news.
Wrap up folks, it’s about to get chilly!
The Great British Public love nothing better than to discuss the weather at length, and I like to include myself in that cohort. Unfortunately (or not, depending on which way you look at it) this winter has been a bit of a damp squib.
Last year we saw blizzards, snow storms, freezing fog and temperatures getting near -16 Degrees C. The UK ground to a total standstill in one of the coldest and dramatic winters in recent years. It was a pain in the backside at the time, but in retrospect it was a proper good winter.
In contrast, this winter has been one of the warmest on record. Sure, it’s been stormy, we’ve had some heavy duty gale force winds and quite a bit of hail. But nothing that you can really call ‘wintry’. There are even snowdrops and daffodils sprouting months early, and I do believe that the unseasonably clement weather has buggered next year’s national rhubarb crop. It’s like winter has been having a massive identity crisis. Until this weekend, that is…
Finally the weather warnings are out, it’s official – the UK is due a full-on Siberian winter that could last for up to four weeks. Not that I’m celebrating – the driving can get treacherous, the town of Oswaldtwistle where I live has a nasty habit of getting snowed in, and I’ll have to splash out on expensive heating. But at least I know where I am with the weather.
Saying that, I’ll be more than happy when spring and eventually summer come along!
Ah, summer… it’s a distant dream right now, but one that helps while away the dreary winter days. And as it happens you can light up your afternoon and check out the iVillage UK top 5 beach destinations. Even the simple act of looking at pictures of sunny, sandy beaches has cheered me up!
And on that note I’m going to grab my thermals, get the hot chocolate on the ready and prepare to snuggle my way through the weekend.
Stay cosy, folks!
