He or she hasn’t been conceived yet. But once this week is up, you will officially be a mum. So exciting!

Since pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last period, this is the two week mark, but guess what? You’re still not actually pregnant yet. However, this is typically the week when ovulation occurs. A quick Sex Ed refresher on how the whole deal works: One of your ovaries releases a ripened egg (or eggs, in the case of fraternal multiples), which travels through the fallopian tube and awaits fertilization. That’s roughly where you are right now. Something fascinating to think about: There’s only a 12- to 24-hour window during which the ripened egg can be fertilized - so your timing, in terms of when you have unprotected sex, should be pretty perfect.

One of the biggest questions on your mind at the moment is bound to be, “How soon can I know if I’m pregnant or not?” Pregnancy tests work by picking up the presence of hCG, a hormone that the cells which become the placenta start producing about six days after conception occurs (so not quite yet, but soon!). This “pregnancy hormone” is detectable first in your blood (through testing by your doctor) and soon after in your urine, as well. The latter is what an at-home pregnancy test would register. And it’s pretty safe to trust a positive result from a basic pee-on-a-stick test. They’re considered about 97 percent accurate. Even though two positive at-home tests are pretty good proof (a testament to how reliable stick tests really are), your doctor still might want to confirm a positive result with a blood test, just to be sure. Feeling crampy? Belly pain such as twinges or cramps that may feel like menstrual cramps is fairly common during ovulation. (Docs even have a name for it: mittelschmerz, which is German for “middle pain.”) That uncomfortable feeling is thought to be caused when the tiny follicle that holds the egg inside your ovary ruptures and releases it. It’s usually nothing to worry about - but it’s certainly no fun, either. A warm bath and an over-the-counter pain reliever can help relieve these temporary cramps.
