Your baby’s eyelids, which have been fused shut, will probably begin to open this week - and she may have eyebrows and lashes to show off, as well. Her skin is still quite wrinkly, but as she keeps accumulating more body fat under the skin, it will begin to smooth out. Brain development is also increasing about now. The surface is beginning to form its characteristic grooves and more brain tissue is growing.
Your body
Welcome to your third and final trimester - the home stretch, mama! At this point you might be ready to not be pregnant anymore. And your belly is so big - and getting bigger! Your uterus is now about halfway between your belly button and boobs. Blood pressure usually goes up around this time - not necessarily becoming high, but likely returning to where it was prior to pregnancy (it tends to dip down in your first and second trimesters). You may also notice your heart pounding - and maybe fluttering or seeming to skip a beat at times. This is normal, but do call your GP if you have shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or light-headedness.
Your life right now
About one in three to one in five babies these days is born via C-section - either because the baby was facing the wrong way or for other medical reasons. And it’s one of those things that has probably been lurking in the back of your mind for some time. Will I need one? Some facts you should know about it: A caesarean section is major abdominal surgery, and when it’s necessary, it can be a life-saving technique for both mother and infant. Women have caesareans for a variety of reasons such as: problems with the passenger (foetus), passage baby’s head may be too big to fit into the pelvis) or power (failure of labour to progress, sometimes due to uterus not contracting vigorously enough). Talk to your doctor about the possibilities and your options - but don’t stress over it.
