Will YoungAlmost a decade after bursting onto the scene as the winner of Pop Idol, Will Young is preparing to release his first 'greatest hits' compilation. He took time out to answer questions put forward by members of the iVillage.co.uk community

It seems hard to believe that it is eight years since Will Young beat off competition from Gareth Gates to lift the Pop Idol crown.

Since then he has established himself as a respected solo artist, releasing four multi-platinum albums and regularly playing to packed arenas.

He took time out of his promotional schedule for forthcoming album The Hits, to answer a range of questions submitted by iVillagers...

Are you looking forward to going on tour later this year? Have you got anything special planned?

Will Young: Very excited about it, it is a time to relax ironically and just focus on performing. It is a 'hits tour' so we are playing all the singles from the last eight years which makes me feel very old!

Do you have any plans to sing more jazz as I think you're amazing at that?

Will Young: I just did the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ronnie Scott's and singing jazz standards has always been such a delight for me, particularly with a big band behind me. Definitely in the future I would love to do a big band jazz album.

What are you most looking forward to this Christmas?

Will Young: I am looking forward to doing nothing, eating loads and hopefully getting some sun. Oh, and maybe a few parties along the way.

When you performed at the Audley End Summer concert you agreed to play at a wedding next year. Was it a genuine offer and will you be going through with it?

Will Young: It was a 'stage offer'. Someone had a sign asking if I would and I think it was slightly in jest, or at least I hope so, otherwise I am in trouble!

Do you plan on doing a Summer Tour next year or maybe a festival?

Will Young: No plans at the moment but there is the new album hopefully for next summer so I will have to wait and see.

I would love to know why you chose to become a pregnant man in your new video. I loved it, it made me feel very emotional.

Will Young: I really liked the idea of playing a pregnant man because through pregnancy I could play out so many emotions and I thought it would be interesting and challenging to do it from a man's perspective.

Who is the best live performer that you have watched?

Will Young: Prince is the best live performer I have seen. He is an incredible musician and truly one of the greats.

What do you think about when you are performing? Does your mind ever wander from the task in hand?

Will Young: Sometimes my mind does wander but it is normally working to keep up with the performance and make sure I am breathing and remembering the words.

Tell us about the new single and album - are you excited to be releasing a hits album?

Will Young: I am very excited about The Hits, it is a benchmark and something that I am immensely proud of. I am looking forward to the next eight years!
