Your child can read, but do they really enjoy it?
Learning to read is a considerable undertaking for any child. Here are some tips to help keep them interested and engaged once they have conquered the basics
Have they got time and space to read?
Reading takes time. And maybe there's no time between school, playing with friends, swimming, football training and the music lesson. Make sure they have a comfy chair or some floor cushions in their room where they can curl up peacefully.
Have they stopped reading altogether?
Perhaps the book is dull and boring. Perhaps the wrong choice was made, or perhaps the level is too difficult. Whatever the reason, everyone gets bored with a book sometimes. Simply encourage your child to leave this particular book and choose another.
Do you still read stories to your child?
There's no need to stop reading aloud just because they can read. Instead, your child might enjoy listening to you read more complicated stories than they could manage alone.
Do you have time to enjoy reading?
You might enjoy reading but may find you are always busy with children, work and the home. It's impossible to do everything you want and sometimes it's your reading time which disappears. But try to indulge yourself with a book - it's a good example to set.
